Itinerary: Excursion 2 days Chefchaouen from Tangier

Day 1: Tangier – Tetouan – Chefchaouen.

We will pick you up at the port or airport of Tangier and we will begin our trip in the direction of Tetouan known as “The White Dove”.
It is a northern city located in the vicinity of the Mediterranean Sea.

Tetouan: A Tale of Two Worlds

Heir to the Roman city of “Tamuda”, its origins date back to the Middle Ages.
We will make a stop in Tetouan and in a free way we will be able to know and discover every corner of this beautiful city. Its whitewashed houses are perched on a small hill.
Its center has two distinct areas: the old medina and the modern area called “Ensanche”. This new neighborhood was built at the beginning of the 20th century, during the time when Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish protectorate.
The medina is one of the most authentic in Morocco, declared a World Heritage Site, a jewel of Muslim culture, with winding streets, pretty squares, brown walls, long and narrow streets, corners and large doors that attract the visitor’s curiosity.

The Medina: A Glimpse into History

Next to the medina is “El Ensanche” a neighborhood of white houses and streets distributed in grids. The construction took place during the era of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco. Additionally, it showcases its Kasbah, positioned on a raised area that offers panoramic views of a significant portion of Tetouan and its environs. As an interesting fact, it’s worth mentioning that María Dueñas’ splendid novel, “The Time in Between,” partially unfolds in the Spanish Protectorate of the 1930s and 1940s, predominantly centered around Tangier and Tetouan.

We will arrive in Chefchaouen, the incredible “Blue City”, after eating in a typical restaurant in the area you will go out with our local guide to discover the city.

The Kasbah: A View from Above

Chefchaouen or Chauen, is a captivatingly beautiful city located in the Rif Mountain Range, its mountains rise above the town like two horns, thus giving the city its name “Chefchaouen” which in Berber means “Look at the horns”.
It is known for its spectacular blue buildings of different shades in its old town, as well as its cobbled and sloping streets full of looms.
In the main square “Uta al-Hammam”, are the red walls of the kasbah, the Alcazaba and a mosque with a tower with an octagonal base.

An Artist’s Haven: Inspiring Creativity

Chaouen has been the inspiration for many painters such as Eugene Delacroix, María Fortuny and Henri Matisse.
Moulay Ali Ben Rachid founded this city in 1741 on the site of a small Berber population. Regarded as a sacred city, it thrived and was safeguarded against foreign invasions by the surrounding mountains.
thanks to the arrival of Muslim refugees from Spain.

An old legend tells that when Spain was Muslim territory, Mulay Ali Ben Rachid fell in love with Zhora, a girl from Jerez de la Frontera. When the Christians were expelled from the Peninsula and emigrated to Morocco, her beloved missed her town very much and they began to build another one just like hers, “Chaouen”.
Currently, its people paint the walls and floors several times a year with irregular shapes coinciding with the changes of the seasons and the annual celebrations with the aim of purifying, sanitizing, providing freshness and repelling insects. Dinner and accommodation will be in this city.
